Visit to the West Vancouver Secondary

This Monday we visited the West Vancouver Secondary School. We went there to get used to where all the classes are and what the classes are like. Each grade 7′s had a grade 8 buddy who used to go to Ridgeview. They took us around the school and showed us everything like where the cafeteria was. It felt like a tour. My grade 8 buddy took me to all his classes and I met some of his friends. He showed me and Nolan all around the school. He said that it was easier to get better grades than in grade 7. We finished our tour early, so we went to my buddy’s class.

The class we went to was cooking class. We were very lucky because we were learning how to make pizzas. Nolan and I just sat there listening to what the teacher was saying. She seemed very nice. It took a lot of time just to learn how to make a pizza. Although we were bored out of our minds, it was worth waiting for. The teacher gave each and everyone a very small piece of the pizza.  After cooking class was over, we all went to the cafeteria and waited for others to come. I bought myself some snack that tasted okay. I think I’m going to know where everything is when I go to high school. It was a very fun experience!

This is the first time writing after my Easter Break. The last few weeks were like any other normal weeks. We started many new assignments. We finally got the instructions on what to do for our term 3 reading assignment. I finished reading the book, but I haven’t started on my assignment because we also started many other assignments, too. In socials, we learned about Ancient Egypt and how people in Ancient Egypt were respected if they could talk into persuading people. So for our assignment, we have to prepare a persuading oral presentation on a certain topic. My topic is that Canada did a bad job of holding the 2010 Winter Olympics. Our teacher wants us to know how to debate in both sides. We also have a french oral presentation on describing our family members.

We also have mayfair coming up. Mayfair is like a carnival that is only held in Ridgeview out of all the other schools in our district. We’re preparing for mayfair by collecting something called tombola jars (jar that contains candy). It is only held in May every two years for one day. It is public, so everyone is allowed to go. I am very excited because it’s the first mayfair that I’m having. I am looking forward to go there. Also, this week we met our buddies. My buddy finally came back from Korea! He told me all about his trip. He told me that he went to carnivals in Korea. He also had fun meeting his grandparents. He told me it was his first time meeting them. It wa very fun.

I didn’t write anything last week, so I’ll talk about it right now. Last Friday, my buddy and I went to see the Paralympics sledge hockey match and so did everyone else. It was Sweden vs. Italy. Jetson was sick, so I had Jetson’s buddy. We went there on a bus. It was the first time my buddy went on a bus. I think he enjoyed it a lot. When we arrived there, we went to watch the game right away. I cheered for Italy while my buddy was cheering for Sweden. During the game, my buddy kept on eating something. I was surprised because even though there were only two pockets in his jacket, foods kept on coming out and out. Italy eventually won by 4:0. It was a fun trip.

Starting from last week, most of the Grade 7 boys play soccer against Grade 5 boys. It’s pretty fun because there isn’t any fouls and we beat the fifth graders all the time. We also started another assignment in tech art. We are drawing a stick figure using green environment transportation. We have to make a 100 slides of the stick figure  slightly moving in every slide. Another thing is that today we get report cards. I hope I did well on every subjects and receive enough A’s to satisfy my parents and myself.

This week was the 2nd week after the Olympic Break. Now, I’m starting to get settled in my school work. Time is going very fast. It seems like yesterday was Monday, but now it’s Friday. We didn’t do anything special this week, so I have barely anything to write about. Starting this week, we’re doing gymnastics at P.E. It isn’t very fun to do, but it is okay. I’m a little good in some skills, but I usually do bad on the other skills. On Wednesday, we met our buddies. My buddy, Alex, wasn’t here because he was still in Korea. He is staying there for three more weeks. Meanwhile, I was working with Jetson and Jetson’s buddy, Kyle. It was fun, but Kyle didn’t draw me in his picture.

In language arts, we are learning words, since Ms. Wilson thought that we were weak in vocabulary. We learned words that had -ology in it. Another thing that was interesting was library. We are learning about Greek Mythology. My group is the puppet group. We picked it because we thought it was the easiest thing to do.  We are doing a myth called, “The Stone Baby.” It is about how Zeus and the other gods became rulers of the world. In science, we are learning about something called “atom.” An atom is a thing that is in everything. Humans, computers, rulers, pencils, and other various things all contain atoms. It is quite an interesting topic to learn about. It was a nice week.

This week was a bit uncomfortable for me. I hurt my finger at football, so I had to get another splint. It was my fourth finger on my left hand right beside the finger I hurt last year. All I can remember is Wednesday this week except for my hurt finger. The first thing we did was seeing our kindergarten buddies. We went down to our kindergarten classroom.  Our job was helping our buddies making Valentine mail boxes. My buddy put a bunch of stickers on the paper bag. My buddy had a creative idea of putting small white hearts in big red hearts and putting small red hearts in big white hearts.

Another thing we did that was interesting was having our last curling class. We played games with other teams, which was fun. We played two games. For the first game, I got my rock in the middle and the other on the red. We lost our second game because we didn’t score any, and the other team got one on red. However, in total, we won the game all because of me. I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t get the prize. Only certain amount of people got it because they were the best team, or they were lucky.

The last thing that was interesting was my last soccer practice. I liked the practice because we played a game right after the warm up. Even though I missed a goal, my team won the game. I hope I score a goal tomorrow and win our last game!

This week was the busiest week for term 2. We had lots of projects, and we had to do our FSA tests.  We were mostly busy because of Socials and LA. For Socials, we had to do two little minor projects. The first one was hard to get an A, because we couldn’t do it for homework, since we needed the textbooks. The first one was to find out 9 elements about an ancient civilization. The second project was following directions, but it was related with ancient civilizations. I was also busy with LA. There was a reading assignment, but since I was busy with the Socials, I ended up starting the LA project late. Luckily, I finished it before the due date.

On Wednesday, it was hockey day for me and my buddies. My buddy, Alex, wore a Sumi hat. It was a little big for him, but it looked pretty good on him. We learned about hockey and played some games after. We also helped our buddies writing a sentence about hockey. He also said that his dad was in the Canucks, but I’m not sure. We had a fun time!

We met our kindergarten buddies this week on Wednesday. It was Olympic mascot day. I didn’t have any mascots, but luckily my buddy brought a big stuffy of Quatchi. Our mission was to teach them all the mascots and their names. My buddy knew most of the mascots and their names, so it was easy for me to teach him. While we were trying to make them learn the mascots, we went to the official site for the mascots and played some games. There were three games: curling, flying, and hockey. I think my buddy liked curling the best because he played it for 5 times and others only once. We also printed a coloring picture for our buddies to work on.

Starting from last week we are doing science experiments for science. The first one was easy, but it’s getting a little harder after that. For LA, we started our Wiki Olympic Project. I have to do research on Green Olympics, which means that I have to find out why the Olympic is good for the environment, and why it’s bad for the environment. It’s a hard topic for me because I never knew much about the Olympics. We also started a library assignment, and we’re doing a reading assignment right now. I finished my role model presentation this week because I got randomly chosen by my teacher. We have a lot to do before Spring Break.

The First Week of School

Posted on January 11th, 2010 in Uncategorized by charlesyri02  Tagged , ,

This week is the first week of school after Christmas Break. I was really tired because I just arrived in Canada from Korea last Sunday right before school began again. I met my friends again and they haven’t changed much. Some of my friends are still away at vacations and haven’t come back. I’m adapting to school again, which was a bit hard at first. We are busy this week organizing and learning new things. We are starting different kinds of new assignments. We only have 6 weeks until the next break because of the Winter Olympics 2010, so we have to finish quite a lot in just a few weeks for our next report card.

School work is gradually getting harder. In math, we’re learning percent (%), which was pretty hard at first, but it’s getting easier as we learn thorough it. Comparing to the things we learned in term 1, it is definitely getting harder. We are now studying for a big test that all students have to do. Our science classes were fun because we were learning different kinds of scientific skills in a fun way by trying to figure out shapes by feeling, hearing, guessing, and all kinds of different other skills. I hope school work would get easier because I’m still tired from the flight even though today is Friday.

Christmas Spirit

Posted on December 4th, 2009 in Uncategorized by charlesyri02  Tagged , ,

Today we made Christmascrackers. We met our kindergarten buddies to make the Christmas crackers together. Inside the Christmas crackers there are candies, chocolates, and all sorts of goodies. The Christmas crackers that we made goes to lots of different places. Some of them goes to Grandview Elementary and some goes to Queen Mary. These crackers are the only Christmas presents they get. We also send it to lots of different organizations. My buddy and I made three Christmas crackers. My buddy tried to stuff too much in the Christmas crackers, so I had to take some of it out. We wanted to make some more, but we couldn’t since we were too slow and the time was running out.

This week in school was special for the grade 7s. Both girls and boys basketball teams had tournaments. They both tried hard, but the girls came in 3rd place and the boys came in 2nd place. Another important thing was Me to We. Our teacher finished counting the Silent Day pledge money. Even though our goal is to raise $3000 until the end of school year, we already raised over $3000 just by doing Silent Day! Also, this week we helped our kindergarten buddies to write their letter to Santa. It was a bit hard for me because my buddy kept on trying to start with “I want….” Anyway, we did lots of events this week.

I Am Silent Day

Posted on November 20th, 2009 in Uncategorized by charlesyri02  Tagged , ,

Today was I Am Silent Day. All the gr.7s had to be silent for the whole day. I Am Silent Day is to raise money for children who don’t have the right to speak. We had to get sponsors, who will donate the money, each time we don’t speak for a block. Silent Day was hard for me because I forgot about it when I woke up today. So, for the first block I failed.

Today, even the teachers had to be silent. It was quite fun working without speaking. In French, we did 7 thumbs-up pointing at each other. The 2nd and the 3rd block was easy. We were doing work all the time, so we barely had time to talk. However, I forgot it was Silent Day again at lunch. We were playing football, so I had to yell in order to get the ball. Now, I’m silently writing about my day today. I enjoyed my first Silent Day.
